Into The Woods

Walk among Redwoods... in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

An experiment 95 years ago led to a forest on the slope of a volcano. Someone decided to see if these California trees could survive in the relatively cool temps of Maui's upcountry, 5000+ feet up on the non-lava side of the Haleakala crater.

Now they're over 100 feet tall and still growing.

Fun On A Boat With Your Chum

And look, a new pal drops in...

I have an irrational fear of 'Jaws', so this week's shark news gave me the creeps. Some researchers had a 9 ft, 1000~pound Great White Shark breech next to them, and then fall right into their boat. Yikes.

But in the end it did more damage to their pride than their persons.

And so, after they got over the shock, the crew ended up helping it back into the water.

What nice shark chums.

Make A Sparkler

1. For this fireworks sparkler you need:

Potassium Nitrate - 6 parts
Granular Magnesium - 4 parts
Charcoal - 1 part
and a starch or sugar 'binder'

Mix, and coat a wire or stick.

This guy uses -marshmallows- for his binder.

A new giant cat may become extinct before most humans know they exist...

This is the Sundaland Clouded Leopard,
filmed in Sumatra for the first time.

This cat was filmed using a camera trap in Berbak Nat'l Park. Can you imagine being the first person to watch it? You're expecting yet another day of wild pigs, and then suddenly there it is!

...But then you'd realize that as soon as you report its existence, others will come to hunt it either for fur or 'conservation'. Having seen the disaster the Chinese wrought upon their pandas, I've lost faith in the programs that drag animals out of their natural habitat.

And we all know if it looked like a warthog it'd be left in peace.
I hope its future isn't as cloudy as its pretty pelt.

A totally unique tidbit about the UK royals.

According to last weeks Register, "Operation Pumpkin" was the name of the top-secret contingency plan for a "runaway bride" should Kate have gotten cold feet and bolted from the abbey.

Apparently the UK security 'spooks' planned for every possible eventuality - including that of Kate leaving Wills at the altar.

The puzzle was, how do their operatives switch tasks from guarding the wedding procession, to creating a moving security cordon around the escaping future Queen - while simultaneously attempting to preserve Prince William's option to pursue and perhaps dramatically win her back?

"Frankly, it's a nightmare scenario," one highly-placed MI5 source confessed to the Reg yesterday. "But you have to plan for every possible contingency, and let's face it, this one's hardly that unlikely, is it? Obviously we had to get together with Clarence House and work something out.

"Naturally, they wanted us to simply make her go through with it - but we said you must be joking: in the UK, in front of millions of witnesses? No way. And the plods would never play ball anyhow.

"So we said, look, if she bottles it we'll just have to get her out pronto, helicopter off the roof maybe, then sort her out with a new identity and young Bill will just have to go on the honeymoon on his own."

(fyi 'Clarence House' means 'Prince Charles & his staff')

Anyway, royal officials were unhappy with that plan. They reluctantly accepted that Ms Middleton remains free to bolt right up until the last moment, but argued that she should be compelled to flee on foot for at least a short distance, so allowing the Prince to pursue her and so perhaps regain some PR benefit for the royal family - and maybe even persuade the absconding future consort to come up to scratch once more.

"That's when it got difficult," says our source. "Now you've got her running out of the Abbey, crowds everywhere, him chasing after her. She's got to be able to run, he's got to be able to catch up if he can. Nightmare."

After protracted, top-secret negotiations between royal staff from Clarence House and representatives from the Metropolitan Police, MI5 and elements of the military, a compromise was agreed. In the event of Operation Pumpkin being put into effect Ms Middleton will be permitted to run out of Westminster Abbey with her bodyguards trailing discreetly at a distance. Plain-clothes undercover police, MI5 officers and SAS soldiers stationed in the crowd will form a mobile flying wedge ahead of her, clearing a path for the fugitive future princess to escape down.

Prince William will then have a limited time, the subject of tense negotiations between Clarence House and security chiefs, in which the path behind Ms Middleton will be kept open for him to go after her, after which the mobile protective cordon will close again at the Abbey end due to lack of manpower and the Prince will have let his bride slip through his fingers.

If Wills reacts fast enough, however, he will be able to chase after his fleeing fiancee for just under half a mile.

"Clarence House wanted a full mile," says our source. "But we said come on, play fair, she's in her wedding dress and there has to be some limit on the overtime budget."

If the Prince fails to intercept Ms Middleton over that distance, the security team will decide that no on-the-spot reconciliation is possible and a strategically positioned taxi, driven by an undercover SAS operative and unobtrusively escorted by several unmarked police cars, will opportunely pull up to carry the escaping ex-future-princess to safety.

"We got Clarence House to cut that by a few minutes by agreeing they could put ringers in the crowd to shout stuff like 'Go on love, give him a kiss'," reveals our source.

We asked our source what plans were in place should Wills, rather than Kate, attempt to flee the wedding.

"Come off it," he said. "We only plan for things that make sense. He doesn't want to be back on the dating scene wearing a rug, does he?"

Because its spring, and that means peewee pachyderms in the pool. This week, the keepers at the Houston zoo brought out the new 'baby' pool for their younger elephants. And it was quite a splash hit...

The World Bank estimates over $1 trillion of the Earth's economy is bribes. Luckily, Vijay Anand, and the people of zerocurrency.org, have begun to reduce that number through financial non-violence. Meet the 'zero rupee':

When asked for a bribe, you hand over this zero-rupee note which looks like real currency but says "Eliminate corruption at all levels. I promise to neither accept nor give bribes." And it works! One official in Tamil Nadu was so stunned to receive the note that he handed back all the bribes he had solicited for providing electricity to an entire village.

Vijay says: "Corruption starts before birth here. Parents have to pay a bribe to the nursing staff to even know the sex of the baby. (If it is a girl child you pay less, if its a boy child you pay a little more bribe.) That is where it begins for an Indian citizen. And after getting discharged from the hospital, (come the bribes for) obtaining of the birth certificate. Then when (they) got to school, obtaining admission requires another bribe..." and so on.

Meri, here's my answer...

I do like real books, honestly.

But my conversion to digital books began the day I went to my library to borrow this hefty new book that had been recommended to me. The librarian found it, and handed it over. Actually she heaved it my way, since it has over a 1000 pages, weighs more than the dog I was pup-sitting, and it has -no- page numbers or index.

I could only read it* with my bent legs propped up on a very sturdy ottoman. (the furniture type - not a guy - sheesh)

Thus began my search for a lighter way to read...

Then Apple annc'd : iPad 2 debuts March 2011 !:

Until I see the new contender, I can't decide. So currently I'm still using my mobile to read eBooks, while waiting to find out which new device will win my heart. Or at least my wallet. I'll keep you posted.

Just A Bit Batty

Its actually feeding time for rescued baby bats.

Over 100 ailing baby fruit bats were found scratching for survival on a Gold Coast forest floor in Australia. The bats left their perches to feed and were then unable to fly back up.

So the 'pups' are being bottle fed and will be kept hanging on clothes lines until they are ready to fly again in about four weeks.

Those little guys look very cute, but
it'll be a bit before they're 'off-line'...

El Caminito del Rey (The King's little pathway) is pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge near Málaga, Spain.

It was built in 1901 for workers at the hydroelectric dam at Chorro Falls, and was one meter (39 inches) wide, complete with a handrail. Now its obviously in a highly deteriorated state, with all those large gaps bridged only by narrow beams. They did install a safety-wire alongside the path, but several people still fell off in recent years, so the local government closed it about 10 years ago.

But apparently they don't patrol it.
Can't blame them - who'd volunteer?
I mean, besides ^ that guy ^.

btw, this inspired me to look up 'scary' words:
frightening, terrifying, alarming, bloodcurdling, chilling, creepy, eerie, hairy, horrendous, horrifying, intimidating, shocking, spine-chilling, spooky, unnerving, perilous, risky, treacherous, uncertain, unhealthy, unsound, wicked... I think they all apply here.

The KC Zoo did notice one of its meerkats was missing, but "They didn't know whether it had been taken by "a person or a predator," which is why
they did not file a missing-meerkat report."
But justice was served, anyway:

''Santhuff admitted he'd jumped into the exhibit, stole the meerkat and stuck it in the stroller, and said that Bradley pushed the stroller out of the zoo and kept the meerkat at his mother's. Donut Lasagna

A specialty of Top Chef Casey Thompson.

Along with the usual lasagna ingredients, she adds brie, spinach, nutmeg, and cream. Then assembles it by laying the noodles on a flat surface, and spooning some of the filling on each, then rolls'm up and places them on edge in a casserole dish. Cheese on top, voila!

Casey says:
" ...I always like a little something different during the holidays; I don't always stick to the rules."

"Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark" is actually on Broadway at last...

According to reports, what they saw was a 3+hour show that was halted by technical delays... getting all of the action down pat has been a great challenge. The first show had five delays, falling stage wires, and even had Spiderman himself hanging over the audience at the end of Act I.(!)

To hear the New York Post say it, having Spiderman on Broadway will garner a lot of unintentional laughs, and massive audience frustration. Michael Riedel called the night an "epic flop" - "dull score and baffling script" - to say nothing of the kinks.

On the other hand, Aint It Cool News posted a review from a fan who said it was hardly that bad. Although the show still needs tweaking, reviewer "DarthDooku" was hopeful... (article)

Is this just a vanity project for Bono?

Just in time for winter...

For the past several months, a small group of knitters in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, have been knitting sweaters for featherless hens rescued from British poultry farms.

The group has even staged two "knit-ins," in which members assemble at a local needlecraft store and craft sweaters -- known in England as "jumpers" -- en masse.

"In the winter, the hens need a little bit of help keeping warm," said organizer and store owner Amy Leader.

The two knit-ins have attracted considerable media attention, which is why several weeks ago she received a phone call reminiscent of an old Monty Python sketch.

"I heard that you're knitting chicken jumpers," the woman said, explaining that she represented a charity that rescued farm chickens. "Would you give me some of them?"

"Do you have a daughter?" Leader asked.

The woman replied that she did.

"It's you I'm making them for!" Leader cried.

The knit-ins have been as good for just about everybody involved. For Leader, they've meant attention for her shop and a chance to incorporate beginners into the circle.

"What's really lovely about a chicken jacket is it doesn't have to be perfect, because -- come on -- it's for a chicken."

There are plans for future knit-ins -- what with the cold weather and holidays coming in -- and that leaves open the possibility of seeing chickens running around England wearing red and green jumpers.

"Maybe we can make little Santa hats for them," Leader said. "The possibilities are endless, aren't they."

My advice? Get'm to hold off seeing 'Deathly Hallows Part 1' til next July, just before Part 2 comes out.

I'm still on the mend,
but at least my brain is working, unlike this guy:

He loaded a $300 inflatable raft with camping supplies, two burritos, a bag of vitamins, a Bible and a mannequin of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After 5 days stranded on an island a mile off-shore he finally used his cellphone -doh!- to call for help.

Covered Bridge

'Covered Bridge' - This is my digital sketch of a covered bridge I saw in Pennsylvania. I loved the style of it, but I've left out a few struts in the interest of an uncluttered image, and time. Hopefully I'll have time later to add in the stream & supports, etc.

Speaking of 'left', again this was using my non-dom hand.
I did use the line tool, and it is 'cleaner' that way.

But is it worth being neat, if I lose the free-hand look?

Leaf Away With Me

'Leaf on Water' - I walked by a leaf on a puddle today. All around it was a strong reflection of the sky. That became the challenge for my left hand today.
(I'm normally right-handed)

Is the blue 'shimmery' enough to be water?
Or does it just look like I distorted a blue sky?

I used the highlight/hold-shift function to slide color in the leaf, and used the rudimentary 'airbrush' function for the water. Perhaps a bit too rudimentary, since its hard to get a genuine 'dappled' look that way. Then again, I wanted to capture the impression of it, and not necessarily duplicate the reality... :-/

The contest was held near La haska, PA, at a place called Peddler's (tho no one has a cart) Village. And now's the time to make holiday plans. Every store there is unique, no chains, so they get a lot of shoppers at gift giving time.

Its like a giant outdoor mall, {store map} with cobbled paths and quirky decorations. Plus lots of food, lodging, a kid play center, and a great variety of wares.

Hobbling Along

As for the real movie?...

The good news for Hobbit fans:

Filming starts this winter, since MGM & Warner Bros. finally gave the go ahead for work on 'The Hobbit' to resume.

To recap, the movie has been officially greenlit, and Peter Jackson is definitely signed on to direct. Plus many of the sets have already been constructed, and the scripts are said to be near completion, with over $30 million spent so far on this epic.

The bad news:

The studios don't have all the ca$h they need.
(And union disputes may add more delay$)

They've only cast half the roles so far.

It will be in two parts

The really bad news:

The current projected release...

'The Hobbit 1' arrives in theaters Dec 2012

Life As We Know It

Last night I got to attend an 'Advance Screening' of this new Katherine Heigl movie.
I liked her in "27 Dresses", so I was happy to go. ('Yes', my ticket was free, but I did ante up for pretzels, so you know I'll be totally fair.)

First, a couple of 'Hollywood' opinions:

Variety gave it a nod: '"Life As We Know It" delivers enough "aww" moments (coupled with the occasional laugh) to deliver its money's worth' ...as a decent rom-com.

Heigl says: "I’m really proud of this movie. It’s probably my favorite film I’ve done to date,” she explained. “It’s just the perfect combination of romance and comedy and heart…"

My opinion? Lets face it, once you've seen the preview, you know what you're getting into, so you can't exactly complain that you were blind-sided by the plot. As my companion said, its a perfect 'airplane movie', bleep out the two '$h!+'s and its ready to go. Some chuckles w/o much stress, plus a cuddly set of triplets(!) playing the baby.

Verdict: 'Hey, its a cute movie.'

Yes, that's right. They've released Cannibal! The Musical which is a student film directed back in 1996 by (co-creator of South Park) Trey Parker, while studying at U of CO Boulder.

His black comedy is loosely based on the true story of ex-con (yes, its spelled that way) Alferd Packer who was hired to lead 5 miners across the mountains in winter, yet reappeared weeks later well-fed and loaded with cash (& wallets) saying he'd lost track of them {burp} in the snow...

Clara, 93, cooks brunch from her Depression-era childhood, to celebrate ThemeThursday.

"First thing we're going to make is sugar cookies"

Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

Had to try them, so I made a one-third batch:

1 large egg (lightly beaten)
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
pinch of salt

Rolled out using more flour.
Then cut into turd-like shapes
- and put on ungreased pan.
350' F oven, for ~ 16 min

Verdict: 'Okay' - they did all disappear by 6pm.
(would be better with vanilla +/ spices)

Had to lol, tho. Coffee & two kinds of sugar cookies.
Nutritionist's nightmare, but 'hey' Clara's still here!

warning - The longer you let them sit around however, the more they become Depression-era tooth-breakers.

Ashlee- did this one year at a daycare I worked at. It really freaked out the kids and they cried for a good half hour!

Mercedes- we set our shoes out and They leave us small goodies. Usually green. :) Also our room would have been disorganized by the leprechauns.

Yarni Gras!- put a green food coloring tablet between the faucet spout and washer ...turned on the kitchen sink, the water came out green.
